Welcome to the midst of „cuffing season“. The leaves are well on their way to have almost fully fallen, whilst singles have hit the ground running with some serious momentum to find their match. Many of you may have heard the terminology „cuffing“ which was first brought about by the Urban Dictionary in 2011 as the moment when „people who would normally rather be single find themselves, along with the rest of the world, desiring to be tied down by a serious relationship”. Some describe it as a season that last’s from September to February and our matchmakers at Simantov International can tell you that our enquiries soar by around 60% just before Rosh Hashanah for dedicated global matchmaking for Jewish Singles hoping to find a special someone just in time for Hanukkah. Whilst the idea itself makes sense, and there is something innate in us to find someone in the winter, we have to remember finding a love that lasts is a marathon not a sprint.

This term for coupling for the colder months resonates year on year with the dating industry and so our Simantov team have been investigating this top dating trend as surely there has to be a little more to it than a winter-warmer wanting. So let’s take a look at some statistics. Dating app Hinge recently polled 1,000 of its active users, and were asked which months they are most interested in finding a casual hookup, a date, or a relationship. Hinge had found that men are 15 percent more likely to be looking for a relationship in the winter than any other season, while women are 5 percent more interested in something more committed during those months. In the spring and summer, men are 11 percent less likely to want a relationship, whereas women are 5 percent less likely- hence summer flings. Not forgetting our global matchmakers seeing a 60 percent increase in applications as soon as those first leaves start to fall.

With a reluctance to go outside and many actively searching for a spot of winter warmth, there’s obviously a little bit of science to back up this very real seasonal partnering process. Dr. Scott Carroll, a physician and psychiatrist in Albuquerque told Medical Daily that there actually is some science to back up cuffing season for these particular colder months, whereby, singles are being slightly more committal to becoming a couple than other months in the year. According to Carroll, one of the reasons cuffing season is real is that we’ve evolved to seek mates in the winter as we have evolved to seek psychological warmth when it’s physically cold.

The surge in the active search for a partner when it’s a little bit colder is nothing foreign to us and so although we get much busier between September and February we have to be a little more vigilant in our positions as we have to sieve out those applicants only seasonally serious in our search. Remember we are finding partners for life, not just for Hanukkah.
